How I Got My Job!

Maybe you're currently out of work, underemployed, or are simply looking for some guidance on how you can improve your situation. Chances are you've struggled with losing hope. You may even be depressed. I know I have been.

That is why one of my favorite topics/labels on this blog has been success stories. These stories have encouraged and inspired me to have a fresh outlook and have even given hope when it has been lost.

Throughout 2008 I am aggressively looking for more success stories to share with others. To that end, I'm launching a new project entitled "How I Got My Job", in which I record 15-20 minute phone interviews where my guests share how they got one of their jobs and release them to the internet as a podcast. Think of it as Inside the Actor's Studio, but for job searching instead of acting.

Here's the basic premise: If you are currently employed or have ever been employed, you have been successful in getting a job. Just as there are certain common threads to each job hunting success story, there are bound to be some unique aspects as well. I look forward to capturing both kinds.

I will most probably record the calls via one of the live conferencing tools that are available and will give out the phone number and other information prior to the set time and date of the interviews. Because the guest will share about one job only, each episode will last about 20 minutes. If it looks like this idea creates an audience, I may look at doing a live show where I take calls. Let's cross that bridge when we come to it, as they say.

I hope that these interviews will encourage and inspire those who may have lost hope or need a fresh outlook. Maybe something heard during one of these interviews will help someone else in their own search.

So, what do you say? I know you've got some stories. Please email me so we can set up a time for one of your interviews: danieljohnsonjr [at] gmail [dot] com

I (and many others) look forward to hearing from you.

Make it a great day!

A little link-love...

... could go a long way.

I've noticed a number of interesting websites linking back here, lately:
  • Open Future©: John S. Veitch from New Zealand includes this blog in a section entitled "People With Ideas" - I consider that a compliment.

  • Work in Progress: Lisa Takeuchi Cullen is a New York-based staff writer for TIME. She writes about workplace trends. I'm encouraged to be among the blogroll.

  • The Job Blog: A set of regularly updated links to jobs and career information from around the web, coming via the Boston Globe's web site.

  • Water Cooler Wisdom: Alexandra Levit's up-to-the-minute career advice from one who has survived the trenches.

  • Wired and Hired: written by recruiters to help professionals navigate changing jobs in marketing, p.r., and advertising careers.

Retrospective - Year-to-date and prior-year snapshots

From time to time, especially since I've been blogging for awhile, I like to look back through the archives of my blogs. I believe, however, that this is the first time I've done this for Get That Job!

Starting off by going back each month of 2007 so far:

Here's what happened as we go back a year at a time during this blog's history:Have you found anything from the archives that you'd like brought back up to the surface? Let me know, and I'll share it with the rest of the group here.

Who is Daniel Johnson, Jr.?

I suppose it's time I should share a bit more about me, in case this is your first time here. Here's the latest version.

I've been blogging since January 2002 and podcasting since August 2005. I now have more blogs than I care to count. I started Get That Job! back in July 2002 because I was finding so much information online as I was going through my own job search. One thing I've learned over the past five years is how important it is to connect with others.

Here is more of me, in case you're interested:

And of course you can find me on MySpace, LinkedIn, and other social media networks. I'm always open to connect; just let me know how you found me.

Get That Job! Online Makeover

If you've been around this blog throughout its nearly 5-year history, you'll know that the general layout hasn't changed that much.

Get That Job! from April 2006

Until today. I encourage you, if you're getting this content via an RSS subscription to stop by the website at getthatjobonline.com to see how it looks.

Some great things you'll find over there are

  • Larger font size, wider layout, and white background
  • Category list
  • Blog archive by year and month (love those twisties!) - did I really have 416 posts in 2003? Wow.
Let me know what you think - I'm not necessarily sold on the template layout just yet, but it's a nice change.

By the way, here's what getthatjobonline.com looked like at the very beginning:

First Post with New Version of Blogger

I just migrated this blog to the new version of Blogger. I guess that means I'll have to spend some time tweaking the layout and stuff in order to better provide the warm, juicy goodness you all have come to expect from visiting Get That Job!

Nothing further to see here. Unless someone leaves a comment, I guess.

Help Make Blogs More Visible!

Help Make Blogs More Visible!

NOTE: Be sure you paste live links for the Path List below.

There are by some estimates more than a million weblogs. But most of them get no visibility in search engines. Only a few "A-List" blogs get into the top search engine results for a given topic, while the majority of blogs just don't get noticed. The reason is that the smaller blogs don't have enough links pointing to them. But this posting could solve that. Let's help the smaller blogs get more visibility!

This posting is GoMeme 4.0. It is part of an experiment to see if we can create a blog posting that helps 1000's of blogs get higher rankings in Google. So far we have tried 3 earlier variations. Our first test, GoMeme 1.0, spread to nearly 740 blogs in 2.5 days. This new version 4.0 is shorter, simpler, and fits more easily into your blog.

Why are we doing this? We want to help thousands of blogs get more visibility in Google and other search engines. How does it work? Just follow the instructions below to re-post this meme in your blog and add your URL to the end of the Path List below. As the meme spreads onwards from your blog, so will your URL. Later, when your blog is indexed by search engines, they will see the links pointing to your blog from all the downstream blogs that got this via you, which will cause them to rank your blog higher in search results. Everyone in the Path List below benefits in a similar way as this meme spreads. Try it!
Instructions: Just copy this entire post and paste it into your blog. Then add your URL to the end of the path list below, and pass it on!

Update

I've added links to other weblogs, my weblogs, and some job-related websites. I am still looking for contributors.

Thursday, July 25, 2002

Welcome to Get That Job!

This is the initial post for this weblog. I am soliciting contributors in order to make it a more collaborative effort, very similar to The End of Free. So... if you're interested please send me an email to danimal0416 AT yahoo.com (I intentionally wrote it that way to prevent my email address from being automatically harvested, since this has happened to me in the past.

Additionally, I maintain a few or more other blogs. I know that may sound like a lot, but since this weblog is a collaborative effort, I won't need to spend much time on this... right?
