Boredom vs. Overwork

ClarkHoward.com reports:

Have you ever worked at a job where you watched the clock the whole day? Years ago, Clark worked as a bill collector for IBM and he was bored out of his mind. His stimulation came when he went to school at night, something IBM graciously paid for. It’s still going on, according to recent several stories and surveys. People who are bored at work have a lower satisfaction with work than those who are overworked. More than half of people are bored at work, but those people are much less happy with their jobs than the half who are overworked. If you’re at a job where you’re just passing the time, it’s not fair to you or your employer.

It makes sense that those who are overworked are more satisfied than those who are bored at work, because they actually have things to do to keep them busy throughout the day. The bored employee (which I, too, have been) perhaps feeling unchallenged by the work load (or possible lack thereof) possibly feels disposable, stuck, and hopeless, decreasing their level of satisfaction with their current job.

Thanks, Rachel, for your comment!

I agree with you. It's frustrating and worrisome for me to be in a situation where I am underworked. I work best in an environment where the expectations are clearly laid out.

That way I'm not always wondering whether I'm going to be out of a job or whether my employer values me.

Boredome is what is killing me these days. Being Consultant is I guess part of it. There are times when you are busy like hell(happy or not) and others when you are not doing anything at all. I have not been permanent emplyee for a while now so don't know how its like to be, but I think one needs to evaluate this point while taking up new consulting job- can you take the risk of going thru patches of no work like this and fear of going workless anytime? I am sure these kind of senarios are possible for non-consulting jobs, but there might be lesser risk of loosing ones jobs. Any thoughts?

I work in a job that is only busy 4 months out of the year. I have applied for a job that has stress every day. Which is really better. boredom or too much stress. My job is secure, my boss told me I am a valued employee. I haven't been offered the other job yet.

I am self-employed and run my own business(es) so there is actually no time when I feel bored. In fact, at the very beginning you are quite overworked.. and when you stay motivated this will most likely result in prosperity.

Being bored on the job is actually very draining and leaves me feeling disposable, like my job could eventually be eliminated.

I hate my boring job and will be quitting if I haven't started using my brain once my relocation costs are fully vested.
